First steps in Learning SAP / ABAP – Beginners Guide to ABAP

In the coming weeks I’m going to be writing some articles that I hope will become an easy to read online course – ‘Beginners Guide to ABAP’. Hopefully this will be of interest to:

I want to focus on just discussing the very basics in this ABAP Training course so as not to alienate people with too much technical speak. So I will be keeping things really simple. My thinking is, by doing it this way and keeping technical and business speak to a minimum, it will help everybody at the ‘beginner level’ to understand what I’m writing about without too many issues; with the result of achieving a little success in what you have learnt.

When appropriate I will provide screenshots and maybe a few short videos explaining specific concepts. I did think about using some examples based on some of the standard R/3 modules, but then not everybody has access to those specific modules in their SAP system. So what I’ll do is use the mini-SAP system that you can download from the SAP developer network (SDN). That way everybody should be able to follow along and keep in step with the examples I give.

What will be covered in this ABAP Training Guide?

So let’s get on to discussing exactly what you can learn from the up-and-coming articles. When I do any teaching to clients, it is normally for BW and I have found the best way to teach any type of technical SAP topic is by going through examples. I will keep the theory down to an absolute minimum and focus of quick result. So from the get go I’ll start off with a simple ABAP report program. From there move on to introduce important topics such as table maintenance that are carried out in the ABAP Dictionary, how to split your program up into different modules for easy understanding and maintenance; moving onto how to control the flow of your program and touch on how you can control complicated data transfer structures between different reports.

I hope this is of interest and if you have any specific requests before I get started, just leave me a message in the comments section below.

  1. I am SAP HR/Payroll Consultant with over 13 years of experience but no ABAP knowledge or any programing, I would like to learn ABAP. Could you please advise if I take ABAP beginner course that will help to learn ABAP up to advance level?
My Target to be able to write Payroll Functions, Appraisal BADIs, Functions etc.. Please advice

    • The course teaches the fundamentals. It goes from zero knowledge through to function modules. It doesn’t cover Badi’s etc… As that will be part of a more advanced course but as I started doing hr related ABAP I know that it will give you 90%. The other 10% is just dealing with the enhancement framework (CMOD etc…) which is pretty easy.
